Rick Hollon | poetry | Kindled Like Bluestem

Kindled Like Bluestem

we kindled like bluestem, like indigo
our rhizomes firm in deepest loam
mammoth tusks couldn’t unroot us

we fed enamored, all athirst for lightning
our true-ish selves gathered one another
shapeshifter gene electric and polyploid

bergamot and vervain—what are stars to aster?
our goldenrod hearts loose to the wind
rain we had, and storm, but lingered for flame

breaking down the bend of former selves
our true-ish shapes fed to deepest loam
we kindled like bluestem, like indigo
