Prayer for the Halloween Season

You, Oh God, are
the full sized Reese’s Cup
among the boxes of raisins.

You were never as good, Lord,
as when you crossed zombies
off the list of Things to Create.

This year, Lord, give the girls
a temperate evening, save them
the indignity of pulling snow pants
over a sultry costume.

For me, God, I ask only
porch swing and wind chime,
leaf smoke and thrush call.

You are the razorless apple,
the pumpkin nourishing squirrels,
the tree that makes fruit

from the compost of last year’s
dropped leaves, eternal to brief
to eternal, amen.
