Maria Brekke | A Mother’s Orbit

A Mother's Orbit

The world turns on a child’s ear.

A mother gazes at a delicate lobe, peering for tiny wisps of hair. She whispers sh-sh-sh-sh-shhh as she completes another orbit of her sun, walking endless circles in an eternity of one child’s breath. She wants to reach down and stroke the outside of a perfect ear, tries to resist, can’t.

A moment of blissful communion. Whispers soften, feet slow.

A babe wakes.

Bright eyes open into stars. Two lips quiver, rippling through space. A mother quickens her rotation, every atom of her body and pulse of her spirit pulled toward this child at her core.
